Worcester Bosch vs Ideal: how to choose between two quotes

The short version

One quote names a Worcester, the other an Ideal, and both promise a long guarantee. The two clocks start in different places and break for different reasons, and that is the part worth comparing.

Two quotes come back. One has a Worcester Bosch on it, the other an Ideal, and the gap in reputation between those two names feels bigger than the gap in price.

Both are mainstream British manufacturers, both are boilers a good installer is happy to put their name to, and both back their appliances with guarantees measured in years rather than months. Neither is a mistake in a normal house.

The comparison worth making is not which badge wins. It is what each guarantee is actually worth once you read the conditions, because that is where the two genuinely differ, and unlike the badge it is something you can still influence before you sign.

The long number on the brochure belongs to the installer, not the boiler

On both sides, the headline guarantee length is conditional, and the condition is who is fitting it.

Worcester Bosch reserves its extended guarantees for specific appliances installed by a Worcester Bosch Accredited Installer with a Greenstar system filter, and its own terms note that the extended lengths are not available where a System Filter Micro is fitted instead. On the Greenstar 1000 and 2000 the extended guarantee is available with any brand of system filter.

Ideal works the same way at the top of its range. Its Max Confidence terms set the full length at 10 years, rising to 12 on a Vogue Max only where it is installed by a Max accredited installer.

So the same appliance quoted by two different firms is not the same guarantee. The question to put to both is simple: which accreditation do you hold, what filter is going in, and what guarantee length does that produce. Ask for the answer on the quote rather than in conversation.

Years from when? The two clocks do not start in the same place

This is the difference nobody puts in a comparison table, and it is the one that can quietly cost you cover on day one.

Worcester Bosch starts the guarantee from the date of installation, but only if the appliance is installed within six months of the date it was manufactured. Miss that and their terms start the clock six months after the manufacturing date instead, whenever it actually goes on the wall.

Ideal gives a longer window, requiring the boiler to be installed and commissioned within 12 months of manufacture, but attaches the start date to the paperwork. Their terms say the warranty runs from the date of installation, and that without proof of purchase, meaning an invoice or a completed Benchmark commissioning sheet, it runs from the date of manufacture on the appliance data plate instead.

In a house that comes down to two small habits. Ask what the manufacture date on the data plate is, especially if the model is being cleared at a good price. Then keep the invoice and the completed Benchmark sheet somewhere you can find them in six years, because on the Ideal side those two documents are the difference between the guarantee you were sold and a shorter one.

What happens if the 30 day registration is missed

Both manufacturers require the boiler to be registered with them within 30 days of installation. What they say about missing it is not the same.

Ideal spells out the penalty in plain terms: if the boiler is not registered inside that window, the warranty period extends to only 12 months from installation. You know exactly what you have lost.

Worcester Bosch lists registration within 30 days as a guarantee condition, and its terms state that failure to meet the conditions may, at their sole discretion, reduce, limit or invalidate the guarantee. That is a broader power and a less predictable outcome.

Neither is anywhere you want to be, and registration is a condition rather than a favour your installer is doing you. Ask for the registration confirmation once the job is done, and check the length on it matches what you were quoted.

The exclusions are near identical, and they are both on your quote

Read the two exclusion lists side by side and the brand argument gets thinner still.

Worcester excludes damage caused by water quality or other external factors causing scale, sludge or blockages, and damage caused by system design or faulty installation. Ideal excludes descaling and work needed as a result of hard water scale or sludge from corrosion, and defects caused by the design, installation and maintenance of the central heating system.

Both also lean on the paperwork. Ideal reserves the right to charge a call out fee where there is no completed Benchmark commissioning sheet present, and Worcester requires annual service details to be recorded and available for inspection on request.

Which means the lines on your quote that decide whether either guarantee survives are the system clean, the inhibitor, the filter and the record keeping. None of those are brand choices. If one quote itemises them and the other does not, you are not comparing two boilers, you are comparing two jobs.

What we are not going to tell you

We are not going to rank the two for reliability. Comparison pages love a claims-per-thousand figure, and when we went looking for the source behind the ones that circulate we could not trace them to a published document, so they do not appear here.

What is checkable is duller and more useful. Both are large manufacturers with their own service networks and national parts distribution, Worcester operating out of Worcester and Ideal out of Hull, and any competent local engineer can get parts for either.

The difference you will actually feel is which of the two your installer fits every week, because that is the one they carry spares for, know the quirks of, and can talk you through on the phone in February.

So which one should you pick?

Pick the installer, then the boiler. If both quotes come from people you would happily have in the house, choose on the guarantee you can genuinely hold, on whether the model suits your mains flow rate and your heat loss, and on whether the unit physically fits where it has to go.

On those grounds the answer changes house by house, which is precisely why no honest page can tell you one of these brands wins everywhere. What we would not do is treat the badge as the reason one quote is dearer than the other. The appliance is the most comparable line on a boiler quote and the least likely explanation for a gap between two prices.

Getting a like-for-like comparison

The clean way to settle it is to have both options quoted by installers who have seen the job, with the guarantee length and its conditions written down each time. Then you are comparing two real offers rather than two reputations.

Tell us about your home and we will arrange up to three quotes from vetted local installers. Ask every one of them what guarantee you will hold, what has to happen for it, and what is going in to protect the system, and the answers will separate them faster than any brand league table.
