HALIFAX

What a boiler swap usually looks like in Halifax.

Calderdale is a terraced borough. Census 2021 puts 41.3% of households in terraces, 28.6% in semis, 15.2% detached and 10.8% in purpose-built flats, and stone terraces climbing the valley sides are what most of Halifax looks like. Akroydon at Boothtown is a Gothic model village of 1859 by George Gilbert Scott, and Copley is the same mill owner's earlier village on the Calder. Victorian villas surround Savile Park and Skircoat Green, while Ovenden, Illingworth and Mixenden to the north were largely rebuilt after the Second World War with council housing between the older mill streets.

Stone terraces built into a hillside often have the kitchen at the back on a different level from the street, so the boiler ends up on a wall where the flue must clear a neighbour's window, a boundary or a retaining wall, and a plume kit or a vertical flue through the roof is often needed. Most of these houses have no room for a cylinder, so a combi swap is the usual job, with long gas runs from a front meter to check for size. The Savile Park villas with several bathrooms suit a system boiler and unvented cylinder, and the post-war semis in Ovenden and Illingworth commonly need a cylinder-to-combi conversion.

We deliberately don't put a figure on this page, because nobody can price a boiler from a postcode. The cost calculator will give you a realistic range for a property like yours in under a minute, and three quotes for your actual job give you the real answer.

Getting three quotes matters more on a conversion

On a straight replacement the prices tend to cluster. On a cylinder-to-combi conversion they do not: how the engineer plans to route the pipework, whether a system flush is included and what happens to the cupboard afterwards can each move the number by hundreds. Three quotes is not about haggling. It is about seeing three different opinions on how the work should be done.

Whoever you go with must be Gas Safe registered. It is against the law for anyone else to work on your gas boiler, and you can check any engineer's registration number yourself before they start.

Finding a boiler engineer in Halifax

Our engineers cover HX1, HX2, HX3, HX4, HX5, HX6 and the wider West Yorkshire area, and those codes are examples rather than a limit. Rather than ringing round yourself, you fill in one form and we pass it to up to three Gas Safe registered engineers who work in your postcode. They contact you, they quote, and you decide.

Ask all three the same questions

Is the price fixed or an estimate? Does it include a power flush or just a chemical clean? Is a magnetic filter included, since most manufacturer warranties require one? Who notifies building control? A good engineer in Halifax will not mind being asked, and one who bristles has told you something useful.

Water and heating in Halifax

Soft waterSupplied by Yorkshire Water

Yorkshire Water's 2024 report for the Halifax zone (Akroydon, Boothtown, Siddal, Sowerby Bridge, Luddenden Foot) classes the supply as soft, at about 14.5 mg/l of calcium, and the Roils Head East zone covering Illingworth, Mixenden, Ovenden, Northowram and Southowram is moderately soft at about 34 mg/l. Limescale is not an issue for a boiler here. The thing to watch instead is that soft Pennine water can be slightly corrosive to radiators and heat exchangers, so a correct dose of inhibitor and a filter on the return matter more than any scale device.

Planning, flats and the edges of Halifax

Calderdale Council is the building control authority and has 21 conservation areas, eight of them in and around Halifax itself: Halifax Town Centre, Halifax No 1 Extension, Akroydon, Copley, Huddersfield Road East, People's Park, Savile Park and Skircoat Green. In Akroydon and Copley the terraces are the reason the area is protected, so a flue terminal on the front elevation is likely to need consent. Census 2021 shows 77.9% of households on mains gas only, 6.5% electric only and 2.1% with no central heating at all.

Areas of Halifax this covers

Savile Park, Skircoat Green, Akroydon, Boothtown, Ovenden, Illingworth, Mixenden, Copley, Northowram and Sowerby Bridge, and everywhere else in HX1, HX2, HX3, HX4, HX5, HX6. The districts are Halifax itself; a job just outside them still reaches engineers who cover that postcode.

Halifax questions.

Halifax has soft water. Does that mean I can skip the scale inhibitor on a new combi?

Yes. Yorkshire Water classes the main Halifax zone as soft and the northern estates as moderately soft, and at those levels limescale does not build up in a plate heat exchanger to any meaningful degree. Manufacturers only require scale protection in harder water. What soft water does need is a proper chemical inhibitor in the radiator circuit and a magnetic filter, because low-mineral water picks up metal from the system more readily. Ask for the inhibitor dose to be recorded on the commissioning checklist.

I live in an Akroydon terrace in Halifax. Can the new boiler flue come out of the front wall?

Probably not without planning permission. Akroydon has been a conservation area since 1976 and its stone frontages are the reason it is protected, so a white flue terminal on the street-facing wall would be treated as an alteration to the building's appearance. Most installations there use a rear wall, a side return or a vertical flue through the roof slope. Calderdale's conservation officers can confirm before the boiler position is fixed.

What does a new boiler cost in Halifax?

It depends far more on the job than the town. A straight combi-for-combi swap sits at the bottom of the range; a cylinder-to-combi conversion sits well above it, and only an engineer standing in your house can see which one you have. The cost calculator gives you a realistic range in under a minute, and comparing 3 quotes for your actual job gives you the real answer.

Which postcodes in Halifax do you cover?

Halifax is HX1, HX2, HX3, HX4, HX5, HX6, and we match on the outward code, so a job in HX1 only goes to engineers who have told us they cover HX1. Those districts are the town itself rather than a service boundary. If your postcode isn't listed, enter it anyway: we place jobs across the UK, not only in the towns we have a page for.

How quickly can someone come out in Halifax?

Your job reaches engineers covering HX postcodes within about a minute of you submitting it. How soon one of them can actually fit a boiler depends on their diary and on the job, so we don't promise a date we don't control. If your boiler has failed completely, say so on the form and it is flagged as urgent.

Are your Halifax engineers Gas Safe registered?

Yes. Every engineer on our network is on the Gas Safe Register and we check the number against the public register before any job is sent to them. It is illegal for anyone else to work on your gas boiler. Ask to see their ID card and check it yourself at gassaferegister.co.uk before work starts.

Do you own the property in Halifax?

This is the one thing we have to know before anything else. A boiler replacement is a permanent change to the property, so it has to be authorised by whoever owns it - which means we can only arrange quotes for the homeowner, or for someone acting on the owner's behalf. Landlords are welcome to use the form for a property they let. If you answer no, we stop there rather than pass your details to an engineer who would not be able to take the job.
