Viessmann 050-W vs 100-W: is the upgrade worth it?
The short version
Compare Vitodens 050-W and 100-W quotes by exact model, controls and warranty registration. Know what to ask before paying for an upgrade.
A Viessmann Vitodens 100-W is worth considering over a 050-W when the quoted installation gives you a specific benefit you need, such as a suitable control arrangement or confirmed longer warranty. The range name alone does not establish that benefit. Ask for the exact boiler version and what the complete installation includes before deciding whether the difference in price is justified.
This guide compares the current UK combi and system ranges using Viessmann's product information checked on 19 September 2026. It is a buying decision aid, not a hands-on reliability test. A replacement still needs an installer to assess your heating system and hot-water requirements.
First check that the two quotes describe the same job
Write down the full model, product code, output and whether each quote is for a combi or system boiler. Viessmann offers both types in these ranges: a system boiler needs a separate hot-water cylinder, while a combi heats water through an internal instantaneous water heater. A quote retaining a cylinder is not directly comparable with one removing it.
Next, tell both installers what you want to improve. That might be a slow bath fill, easier heating controls or replacing an unreliable appliance. Ask them to explain how the proposed system addresses that need. A model upgrade without that explanation leaves you comparing names rather than outcomes.

Which advertised features are actually different?
Both current product pages describe a stainless steel Inox-Radial heat exchanger and a MatriX-Plus burner. Those features alone do not distinguish the 100-W quote from the 050-W quote. Nor do they prove which installation will last longer in your home.
| Feature | What to establish | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Boiler identity | Exact product code and combi or system configuration | Range names can appear on different generations and outputs. |
| Controls and connectivity | Controller model, WiFi version, accessories and setup included | An app capability is not a complete description of the installed controls. |
| Heating and hot water | How the proposal meets the assessed demand and water supply | The more expensive range is not automatically the better fit. |
| Warranty | Term, registration route, conditions and who provides confirmation | An advertised maximum is not evidence that this quote includes it. |

Do you need the 100-W to get WiFi?
Do not assume that you do. Viessmann's 050-W page describes an integral WiFi interface on versions using its newer electronic platform, but also says availability depends on the version. Its current 100-W page describes integrated WiFi with the One Base platform. Ask the installer to identify the actual product being supplied and demonstrate the proposed controls at handover.
If you want to keep an existing thermostat, name it before accepting either quote. Ask what functions will work, what additional components are included and what you can operate without the app. Do not pay for a range upgrade on a vague promise of 'smart control'.

Why might the warranty figures on quotes differ?
The current product pages advertise 10 years for the 050-W and 12 years for the 100-W when registered through VPlus. Viessmann's separate warranty registration page also lists seven-year standard cover with chargeable upgrade options. Read the conditions alongside the number: these pages do not establish the cover included in your particular installer’s quote.
The registration page says installations must be registered within 30 days to qualify for more than two years and states that its listed standard warranties apply to mainland Great Britain. Ask who will register your installation, which route they will use and when you will receive confirmation. Have the installer supply the applicable written terms, including ongoing maintenance requirements and exclusions, before you compare warranty value.

A practical way to decide whether to upgrade
Consider two possible outcomes. If both surveyed proposals meet your needs and provide the controls you want, ask whether the remaining difference buys something you value enough to pay for. A longer confirmed warranty may matter to you; an unexplained model badge may not.
If the proposals differ in system design or installation work, settle that difference first. Ask for the same assumptions about cleaning, pipe alterations, flue work, disposal and making good. Keep the manufacturer's appliance warranty separate from the installer's responsibility for the work. Comparing the totals before aligning those assumptions can give the wrong impression of what the upgrade costs.

Send this with your request for quotes
Please quote the exact Vitodens model and product code, explain why it suits my heating and hot-water needs, and list the controller and all installation work included. Please confirm the warranty term, registration route and exclusions. If you recommend the alternative range, explain the practical benefit in my home and identify what changes in the full quote.
Boiler Comparisons introduces homeowners to independent installers; it does not install boilers or provide the manufacturer's warranty. You can request replacement or installation quotes and use the same questions with each installer. Availability depends on your postcode and the installers able to take the work.
