My installer wants to fit a brand I have never heard of

The short version

Not knowing the name tells you almost nothing. Here are the four things that actually decide whether an unfamiliar boiler is a good idea in your house, and why the famous badge can quietly come with less cover than the one you have not heard of.

It is one of the most common moments of doubt in the whole process. Two quotes name boilers you recognise from television advertising, and the third names something you have never seen in your life. The instinct is that the installer is cutting a corner, or getting a better margin, or both.

Sometimes that is exactly what is happening. Often it is not. The useful thing is that you can tell the difference without knowing anything about boilers, because the questions that separate the two have nothing to do with the brand's reputation.

Never heard of it is not the same as small

The UK market has a handful of names that advertise to householders and a longer list that only advertises to the trade. An installer reads trade press and fits forty boilers a year. You have bought two boilers in your life and both times you saw the same three adverts. The gap between what you have heard of and what exists is enormous, and it is mostly a marketing budget rather than a quality signal.

Glow-worm is the cleanest example. Plenty of homeowners have never heard of it, and it has been owned by the Vaillant Group since 2001, with boilers built at their plant in Belper in Derbyshire. Somebody being offered a Glow-worm instead of a Vaillant is not being pushed away from the manufacturer, they are being offered a different range from the same one.

So the first thing to do with an unfamiliar name is not to judge it. It is to look up who owns it and where the UK service operation sits. That is a two minute job and it usually settles the emotional part of the question.

The guarantee is where the real difference hides

This is the part almost nobody checks, and it is the one that can make the unfamiliar boiler the better buy on paper.

The long guarantee figures attached to the famous brands are frequently conditional on who fits the appliance and what goes in alongside it. Worcester Bosch state it plainly in their own terms: extended guarantees are available on specific appliances when the boiler is installed by a Worcester Bosch Accredited Installer and a Greenstar System Filter is fitted, and they are not available at all when the filter used is the System Filter Micro.

Read that against a real quote. If the installer offering you a Worcester Bosch is not accredited by Worcester Bosch, the number you are picturing may not be the number you get. Meanwhile a less famous manufacturer may give its full guarantee length to any Gas Safe registered engineer, with no accreditation tier at all. The unfamiliar badge can end up carrying more cover than the famous one, purely because of who is holding the spanner.

So the question is not which brand has the longer guarantee. It is: what is the guarantee length on this boiler, fitted by you, and what has to be true for it to hold.

The conditions are usually the same whatever the badge

It is worth knowing that the things which void a guarantee barely vary between manufacturers, so an unfamiliar brand is not usually signing you up to harsher terms.

Registration inside thirty days of installation is standard. Worcester Bosch require it in their conditions and Vaillant require it within the same window, with the guarantee otherwise reverting to a shorter default. An annual service by a Gas Safe registered engineer is standard. Vaillant go further and require the service details to be recorded in the Benchmark logbook and kept available for inspection, which is a paperwork condition rather than a mechanical one and is the single easiest way to lose cover you have paid for.

None of that changes because the name on the front is unfamiliar. What does change between brands is the length, the accreditation tier, and what the manufacturer will do about system water quality, so those are the three to ask about.

Can somebody else fix it in eight years

This is the honest risk with an unusual choice, and it is not about quality at all. It is about what happens long after the installer who fitted it has retired or moved away.

Two things to establish. Who attends a warranty call: the manufacturer's own engineers, or a subcontracted network. And whether other firms near you will work on it, which you can test in about ten minutes by ringing two local heating companies and asking whether they service that make. If both say yes without hesitating, the brand is normal in your area whatever you personally think of the name. If both hesitate, that is real information.

Availability of parts matters too, though be careful with what you read about it. No UK boiler manufacturer publishes a commitment to how long they will keep parts for a discontinued model, so anybody quoting you a number for that is guessing. What you can ask is whether the model is current or being run out, which a manufacturer will answer.

And check the engineer is qualified for it

Gas Safe registration is not a general licence. It is held by a person and it lists the specific categories of work they are assessed for, and those categories and their expiry dates are printed on the back of the card rather than the front.

So the check is the same as it would be for any boiler: look at the back of the card, not just the front. Somebody can be genuinely registered and still not hold the right category for what is in front of them. That has nothing to do with which brand is being fitted, but it is the moment to do it.

What this comes down to

An installer suggesting a brand you do not know is usually suggesting the boiler they fit most often, know best, and can get parts for on a Saturday. That is worth more to you over fifteen years than a name you recognise from an advert, fitted by somebody who fits one a year.

The way to be sure is to make the comparison specific: guarantee length as fitted by this person, what the guarantee requires, who attends a fault, and whether other local firms work on it. Ask that of every quote and the unfamiliar name either answers well or stops looking like a bargain.

If you only have one quote in front of you, that is the harder problem to fix. Getting a couple more is what turns an unfamiliar recommendation into a comparison you can actually judge.
