Local vs national boiler installers: who should you get a quote from?
The short version
Compare local and national boiler installers by the work included, who takes responsibility and aftercare. Company size alone does not decide the better quote.
A local installer is worth shortlisting if you can deal directly with the person responsible for assessing and fitting your boiler. A national company is worth shortlisting if its booking and support arrangements suit you better. Confirm those arrangements with each business: company size alone does not establish them. Compare the written installation scope and who handles problems afterwards before choosing.
What are you actually comparing?
Before you shortlist anyone, separate three roles: the company selling the installation, the engineer fitting the boiler and the organisation providing the boiler guarantee. They may be different businesses.
You might book directly with an independent installer, buy through a national company or request introductions through a comparison website. Establish which arrangement applies before you pay a deposit.
Manufacturer branding needs the same care. Vaillant's installer-finder terms explain that the listed installers are independent businesses and that your installation contract is with the installer. Vaillant does not accept responsibility for their workmanship. A familiar manufacturer logo is therefore not a substitute for checking who is doing your job.
Ask each company: “Which business will be named on my quote and invoice, and who do I contact if there is an installation problem?”

When might a local installer be the better fit?
A local business is worth considering if you want to discuss the job directly with the person responsible for it. That can be particularly useful when you need to explain awkward access, an existing heating problem or plans to change the system later.
Check that this is how the business actually works. Will the person surveying your home also fit the boiler? If someone else will attend, how will the survey findings reach them?
Ask about availability after installation too. A direct mobile number is useful, but you also need to know what happens when that engineer is on another job or away.
Local does not automatically mean cheaper, quicker or more attentive. Those are things to establish from the quote and the answers you receive.

When might a national company be the better fit?
A national company is worth considering if its booking process, payment arrangements and support service suit you. Check the particular offer rather than assuming every large provider includes the same things.
For example, British Gas currently offers both an online estimate and a home visit with a heating survey and fixed-price quote. Booking online therefore does not necessarily mean that the job will proceed without further assessment.
The useful questions are practical: has your proposed installation been assessed, what is still provisional, and who can approve a change if the engineer finds something unexpected?
A recognisable company can still be the weaker choice if its quote leaves your particular job unclear. Equally, a well-explained national offer may suit you better than a local quote with unanswered questions.

How do you compare their quotes fairly?
Give both businesses the same description of your home and what you want changed. Ask them to explain any difference in their proposed solution, rather than forcing them to quote for a boiler that may not suit your needs.
Use this checklist beside each written offer:
| What to compare | What you need to know |
|---|---|
| Proposed boiler | The exact model and why it suits your heating and hot-water needs |
| Assessment | What has been checked and what still needs confirming |
| Installation work | Which controls, pipework, flue work and system preparation are included |
| Disruption | Expected time without heating or hot water, access requirements and making good |
| Changes | How additional work is explained, priced and agreed before it starts |
| Aftercare | Who handles boiler faults, installation problems and routine servicing |
For a fuller specification checklist, see our questions to ask before accepting a boiler quote.
A useful decision rule: if a difference between the offers could change the work or the support you receive, resolve it before comparing the final totals.

Does a longer boiler guarantee mean better aftercare?
It can be valuable, but first find out what it covers and who provides it. A boiler guarantee is not necessarily cover for everything connected to the boiler.
Worcester Bosch's published terms, for example, cover specified product defects but exclude external system components and damage caused by faulty installation. They also require annual servicing, and the guarantee itself does not include the cost of that service. These are Worcester Bosch's terms, not a description of every provider's cover.
Try two questions with each company:
“If the boiler develops a fault, who should I contact first?” “If a connection fitted during the installation leaks, who will arrange to put it right?”
You want clear answers to both. Ask for the installation workmanship terms separately, including their duration and exclusions. If an offer includes additional cover, check whether it is optional, when it ends and whether it renews.
Consider an illustrative comparison: two businesses offer the same boiler model. One specifies who will deal with an installation problem; the other mentions only the manufacturer's guarantee. You do not yet know whether the second offer provides less support or simply describes it badly. Ask for its installation terms before treating the offers as equivalent. This is a comparison method, not a finding that either type of installer provides better cover.

How do you check the engineer who arrives?
Check the individual engineer as well as the business you booked. HSE explains that the Gas Safe Register's checking service lets you use the engineer's licence number to verify their identity and qualifications. Check that those qualifications cover the work you need.
Apply the same check whether you booked a local business, a national provider or an installer introduced through a website.

Which should you choose?
Choose the business that has understood your home, explained its proposed work and made its aftercare responsibilities clear. A quote that answers those questions gives you a stronger basis for a decision than company size alone.
If you already have a national quote, you can request local boiler installation quotes through Boiler Comparisons and compare them using the checklist above. Boiler Comparisons is a quote comparison service. Check the named installer and their written terms before accepting an installation offer.
Keep any offer that genuinely suits your home on the shortlist, whichever route you used to find it.
