Ideal boiler F3 fault code: what it means and what to do

F3 on an Ideal boiler is a fan fault. What the fan does, the one check you can safely make, what an engineer should test before fitting a new one, and when F3 is a warning about something bigger.

F3 on an Ideal boiler is a fan fault. Ideal's own Logic guide puts it simply: the fan is responsible for pushing gas up and out through the flue, and F3 means the boiler cannot confirm it is doing that. So the boiler refuses to light.

That refusal is the point. On a room sealed condensing boiler the fan is part of the safety chain, not a comfort feature. No proven fan means no proven route for the combustion products, and the control board would rather leave you cold than fire a burner it cannot vent. You will see F3 on the Logic and Vogue families, which between them fill a lot of the rental and newer estate stock around Northampton and Milton Keynes.

What causes it, in the order it usually turns out to be

A fan fault is not always a failed fan. In order of how often each one is the answer:

  • A one off glitch. The board asked, did not get a clean answer, and locked out. Ideal's own homeowner advice for F3 is to restart the boiler, and a fair share of F3s never come back after one reset.
  • The fan is being made to work against something. A restricted flue, a terminal partly blocked by debris or a nest, or a long flue run with more bends than it likes. The fan is fine, the resistance is not, and the speed the board reads is wrong because of it.
  • Wiring and connectors. The fan lives in a hot, vibrating box. Plugs work loose, connections corrode, and the speed signal back to the board is the first thing to drop out.
  • Water where it should not be. A weeping heat exchanger, a leaking seal or condensate finding the wrong route can land water on the fan or its connections. This one matters far more than the fan itself, and we come back to it below.
  • Worn bearings or a failing motor. The genuine fan failure, and often audible first: a fan that grinds, rattles or drones for weeks before it locks out.
  • The control board itself, reading a healthy fan wrongly. Least common, and only diagnosed after everything above has been ruled out.

What you can safely check yourself

Very little, and that is not us being cautious for the sake of it. The fan sits inside the sealed combustion chamber, behind the case, and the case is not a homeowner panel.

  • Reset once, as Ideal's guide suggests. Hold the reset as your manual describes and let it try again. If the boiler fires and stays running, that was the glitch.
  • Listen while it tries. A healthy fan spins up audibly in the seconds after a reset, before ignition. Silence, or a grinding or rattling noise, is worth telling the engineer.
  • Look at the flue terminal from the ground. Obvious debris, a nest, plastic sheeting blown against it, a bin pushed up under it. Note what you see. Do not poke it, do not go up a ladder, and do not clear anything at height.
  • Look for water marks under or around the boiler and on the floor beneath it. If there is any sign of a leak, say so when you book the visit. It changes what the engineer looks for.

Then stop. Do not reset repeatedly. A fan that is genuinely failing does not improve for being asked ten more times, and a boiler that cannot prove its vent path should not be nagged into trying.

Where it stops being your job

The moment the case comes off. Ideal's own escalation for F3 is the same as for their other codes: if the reset does not resolve it, contact Ideal while the boiler is under warranty, or a Gas Safe registered engineer if it is not. Anything touching the fan, the flue connections or the sealed chamber is an engineer's work, because getting it wrong puts combustion products in the room rather than outside it.

It is worth knowing what a competent visit looks like so you can judge it. The engineer should check the electrical supply to the fan and the speed signal coming back, not just swap the part. They should check the flue for restriction and check the flue length and bends against the boiler's own limits. They should look for the water ingress question specifically. And when the boiler is running again they should analyse the flue gases, because a fan that has been running wrong may have left the combustion out of tolerance. A visit that fits a fan and leaves without a combustion check has done half the job.

Repair or replace: what F3 is telling you

Taken on its own, a fan is one of the better repairs on a boiler. It is a discrete, replaceable component, it is a known part on a common appliance, and on a boiler with years left in it the sensible answer is nearly always to fit one and carry on.

The fork opens on three specific findings. First, if the fan died because water was landing on it, the fan is the symptom. Water inside the case usually means a heat exchanger, a seal or a condensate route at fault, and on an older Logic that is a different scale of repair entirely, the kind that starts to overlap what a replacement costs once labour is counted. Second, if F3 keeps returning on a boiler whose flue was always marginal, exposed or over long, the installation is talking rather than the appliance, and a new fan will fail the same way. Third, if this is the third or fourth part in two winters on an out of warranty boiler, the parts are no longer the question.

Check what cover you actually have before assuming any of it is free. Ideal's terms lapse the warranty where the annual service has been missed, so an older boiler with a patchy service history may be less protected than the paperwork in the drawer suggests. Age, the scale of this specific repair, and how many times you have met the code before are what decide it.
