My boiler keeps breaking down: what the pattern is telling you

Three call-outs in two winters is a pattern, not bad luck. But whether the answer is a new boiler depends on something almost nobody asks first: is it the same fault coming back, or a different one every time?

The standard advice on this question is easy to find and not much use. Two or three call-outs in a year, it says, and you should replace the boiler. That is a rule about averages, and it skips the only question that actually decides the answer.

We place boiler enquiries with installers around Northampton and Milton Keynes, and repeat breakdowns are one of the most common reasons people get in touch. The useful first move is not to count the call-outs. It is to look at what has actually failed each time, because two very different situations produce the same number of visits and they end in opposite places.

The question that splits the answer in two

Go back through your call-outs and work out which of these you are looking at.

The same fault keeps returning. Pressure that will not hold. The same lockout code. Overheating, then a reset, then overheating again a fortnight later. If the boiler keeps failing in the same way, something is causing it, and that cause has not been found and fixed. It is often not in the boiler at all.

A different fault every time. A valve one winter, a pump the next, a fan after that. Nothing repeats, but nothing stays fixed for long either. That is a different story: it is an appliance reaching the end of its working life, and that is the pattern that argues for replacing rather than repairing.

When the same fault keeps coming back

A recurring fault is a symptom, and a symptom that returns after a repair usually means the repair treated the symptom. The causes that sit behind it are mostly outside the boiler casing, which is exactly why swapping parts inside the casing does not stop it.

The usual candidates an engineer will be looking for are the state of the system water, an expansion vessel that has lost its charge, a leak somewhere in the pipework or under a radiator valve, and a system that was never properly cleaned or balanced when the boiler went in. Manufacturers say the same thing about the pressure case in particular: if you are topping the system up noticeably more often than normal, that is not something to keep doing, it is something to have investigated.

Sludge deserves a specific mention because it produces so many different-looking faults from one cause. Corrosion debris circulating in the system restricts flow, and restricted flow shows up as a boiler that overheats and cuts out, a pump working harder than it should, a diverter valve that sticks, radiators that never quite come up, and eventually a blocked heat exchanger. Four separate call-outs, one underlying problem, and none of the four repairs touches it.

The part nobody mentions before you buy a new boiler

Here is the thing that changes how you should read all of this, and it is in the manufacturers' own paperwork rather than anyone's sales patter.

A new boiler does not come with protection against the thing that has been killing your old one. Worcester Bosch's published guarantee terms exclude damage to the appliance caused by water quality or other external factors causing scale, sludge or blockages, and separately exclude damage caused by system design or faulty installation. Read that next to a system full of debris and the position is uncomfortable: you can fit a brand new boiler onto the same dirty system, watch it fail in the same way, and find that the failure is outside what the guarantee covers.

So if your breakdowns trace back to the system rather than the appliance, replacing the boiler on its own is not the fix. It is the same fault with a newer badge on it. That is not an argument against replacing. It is an argument for making sure the cause is found first, and for judging quotes on whether they deal with it.

When a different fault every time is the answer

If nothing repeats and the failures are unrelated, the honest reading is usually simpler. Components that have run for a decade or more start reaching the end at roughly the same time, because they went in on the same day and have done the same hours.

Three things turn that from an observation into a decision. The guarantee has expired, so every failure is now a call-out charge, a part and labour, with the whole judgement landing on you each time. Parts availability tapers as a model ages, and an obsolete part ends the conversation regardless of what you would have chosen. And each repair is buying months rather than years, which is easy to miss when you look at the repairs one at a time instead of adding up two winters of them.

What to ask before you agree to the next repair

Whichever pattern you have, the next engineer through the door is worth more to you as a diagnosis than as a repair. These are fair questions and a good engineer will not mind any of them.

  • What is the root cause of this fault, as opposed to the part that failed?
  • Has anyone looked past the boiler at the system it is connected to?
  • What did the system water look like, and is there a filter fitted? If there is, what came out of it?
  • Is this the same underlying problem as my last two call-outs, or a separate one?
  • Are parts for this model still readily available?
  • Can I have that in writing, so I can show it to whoever quotes for a replacement?

If you do replace, make the quote cover the system

The industry code of practice for domestic heating water, BS 7593, sets out what should happen when a boiler is installed: the system is cleaned, an approved corrosion inhibitor goes in, an in-line filter is fitted in the circuit, and the inhibitor level is checked and maintained afterwards rather than dosed once and forgotten. That is the part of the job that decides whether a repeat-breakdown history ends with the old boiler or follows you to the new one.

It is also worth knowing that some manufacturers make their longest guarantees conditional on a filter being fitted and on the installer holding their accreditation, so the specification and the guarantee you end up with are linked. When you compare quotes, look for the cleaning method, the inhibitor and the filter as named lines. A quote that covers only the appliance is cheaper for a reason, and on a system with a breakdown history that reason is your problem later.

Where that leaves you

Count the faults, but sort them first. Same fault returning, and the job is to find the cause before you spend anything else, because a new boiler inherits the cause. Different fault each time, and the boiler is telling you it is finished, and the sensible move is to replace it in your own time rather than in the middle of the first cold week.
